Nordic NEW MUSIC: Selmer

What we could do with right now is some lighthearted fun indie pop – and that is exactly what you get with Norway’s Selmer!

For those that might not have discovered you yet tell us who you are and how would you best describe your sound?

I am Julian, a singer/songwriter based in Norway who makes music under the name Selmer. My sound would be best described as lighthearted fun and retro flirtatious indie pop with dash of slacker, and some jizz jazz.

Is it true that you wanted to take up surfing but didn’t know how to so you wrote a song about it instead?

Well, I never tried surfing that’s true. The song «Surfin With U» was actually about being in a relationship for the first time. But after listening to any Beach Boys song, it changed meaning to instead being about trying surfing for the first time. Anyways, it’s about both – love and surfing.

Your new single ‘New Me’ is out now – tell us some more about the track and what else we can expect from you this year?

«New Me» is the soundtrack of my graduation from being a boy to a young adult. It’s inspired by Motown and kind of early disco tracks. Even though it sounds nothing like disco..

This year you can expect more singles coming out in a furious tempo, with good and bittersweet vibes.

Whereabouts from Norway are you from – have you any favourite places you love to travel to there?

Born and raised at my favorite place Grünerløkka in Oslo.

What is something you are looking forward most when we finally return to some normality?

Playing gigs of course! And going to concerts myself. But Im really looking forward to start hugging friends and family again :`(

What have you been listening to, reading, or watching recently during this lock down – any great recommendations? Finally, what is your top tip of the day?

It goes without saying, but I’ve watched Tiger King. And also a movie called The Holy Mountain (I’m still trying to interpret that movie). I started listening to Talking Heads again recently, which I highly recommend.

Tip of the day?

Don’t wear a white t-shirt while cooking any sorts of food.
