NEW MUSIC FEATURE: David Thomas Jones

In today’s New Music Features we head over to Texas to talk to David Thomas Jones about what he has been working on and what is next for the artist!

For those that don’t know you tell us who you are…

I’m just a dude living in Austin, TX.  I’ve been making music for a while now.  I used to have a band called ‘Watch out for Rockets’.  We recorded everything on a 4 track cassette recorder.  I also played drums in a band called The Murdocks.  The Murdocks have a completed album that should be out sometime this year.  I think both of those bands are on Spotify.  Been in some other bands here and there playing different instruments.  Just started a really cool band playing bass, but then this whole pandemic thing hit, so we haven’t been able to record or play shows yet, but I’m really excited about where it could go once things start rolling again.

You had your single ‘Cultocracy’ release back in February – what can we expect next?

Great question!  I’ve been wondering myself. i have a bunch of lo-fi 80’s synth type music that i’ve been meaning to clean up and put out, possibly under the name johnny popcorn.  i also have some songs that are more in line with my solo stuff that i’ve been working on. i just need to be a little less lazy and get to it!  whatever it is it will probably be a handful of singles or an EP.

Your songs have got various sounds going on – how would you describe your sound and some of the influences you have?

I have a lot of influences and am into all kinds of music across the board, so I would describe it as all over the place.  It’s probably just a matter of what’s inspiring to me at any given moment.  In general I’ve been a huge fan of Guided by Voices, mostly their earlier stuff.  David Bowie, The Kinks, Devo, Black Sabbath, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Fugazi…just all kinds of stuff. Too much to name.

We read about your collaboration with Noel Wells can you tell us a little more about that?

We’ve been friends for a long time. We released an EP called the ‘Fritzl Babies’ back in the day.  I think it’s on bandcamp still.  hse made a movie called ‘Mr. Roosevelt‘ a few years ago and I made some music for that and had a little part in it.  Around that time she started playing guitar and writing all these great songs and I would occasionally play them with her live.  So that kind of just progressed into me producing and playing on a couple of her songs.  We just vibe well and it’s super fun to work with her on anything. She’s directed a couple music videos for me too.  She’s an amazing talent and super cool person.

What have you been listening to, reading, or watching recently during this lock down – any great recommendations?

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Fugazi and Operation Ivy.  I think Operation Ivy has been helpful in these depressing times because the music has a certain celebratory joy and raw energy to it.  So listening to that has been getting me out of dark moods that I put myself in by reading the news.  Oh and I’ve been watching Hitchcock movies and reading Siddhartha by Herman Hesse.  Super good.

Finally, what is your top tip of the day?

Don’t let the assholes win.

Great words of advice there from David – please go and give him a follow on Instagram (you can find his account here @daveofthewakinguniverse and check out his music here on Spotify
