In our second new music feature this week we got to chat to the talented Kid Brunswick about his new single (released today) and his plans for the future with his music!
You have had a bit of time out but it is great to see you back – you have some new music dropping at the end of the month – tell us more about that!
I’ve had a lot of mental health problems throughout my life and I was getting to a stage where I wasn’t even enjoying making music anymore. I had to go away for a period of time to really address these issues going on, I didn’t really want to go away but I’m glad I did, I have an opportunity now to actually have a beautiful career making music. I’m dropping a song called “Penny’s Out Of Work” featuring a friend of mine who’s been there for me for years. We shot the video in Palm Springs in the summer of last year and I’ve been waiting to drop it for so long. The song itself addresses alcoholism, addiction and vulnerability.
You have such an eclectic sound – is there a direction you are going in with your new music?
The new tracks are definitely heavier and more upbeat than my previous project. I like to think that the new material sounds less commercial and hits harder than anything I’ve created before. I’ve tried working with other people and it’s worked about 10% of the time, but I still cling to the method of writing and producing all my own material. I’ve stripped back the sound and focused more on the song rather than just the beat. Every lyric means something to me, I know people will be able to relate to the new tracks.
‘We surround ourselves with chaos’ seems a pretty relevant theme a year later – is there plans to expand on that theme?
I wrote most of those songs when I was between the age of 18 and 19. I hardly listen to it now. The title definitely relates to my upbringing and how I then lived my life during my teens, but I’m trying to move away from that headspace.
Are you looking to continue to drop EPs which seems to be the trend or is there plans eventually for an album?
I have no idea what’s going to happen. I love the idea of writing an album but even saying that implies this weird sort of pressure to write something as influential as Nevermind because I’m my own worst critic.
Who have you been listening to / watching / reading recently ? Have you any recommendations?
I’m listening to 070 Shake’s new album, a lot of Lil Peep and 100 gecs. I’m currently reading The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle, it’s helping me stay present and not worry about the future.
Finally, what is your tip of the day?
Why do you want my advice? I’m completely insane.
