We have been very lucky to discover some great podcasts over the past couple of years – another to add to our list is Drew Zakmin’s One Headlight! We caught up with Drew about his 90s fascination, how he got into podcasting and more!
Podcasting – how did you get into it? Was it something you planned or fell into?
I did not plan on it at all. Actually I actively avoided podcasts, not sure why, but once I tried one out I was hooked. I was amazed at the variety of topics I found and decided to do one on the 90s, since that is a topic I am passionate about. I also have a long commute to work so this was a much better way to pass the time than sitting on conference calls pretending like I give a shit about my job.
What was the first podcast that you listened to and got you into podcasts?
The first one I checked out was Stuff You Should Know. I’m a huge history nerd, and they have lots of historical topics on their show. I also started off listening to the Jocko Podcast, Mike Rowe’s That’s the Way I Heard It, and Stuff You Missed in History Class. There was a 90s Podcast called That’s So 90s which first gave me the idea that I can even talk about a topic like the 90s. Once I heard that, the creative juices started flowing and decided to do my own thing.
Your specialist subject is the 90s – what are some of your highlights of the 90s?
I was totally blessed to have the childhood I had, so thanks to mom and dad for that! When 1990 rolled around I was 9, so my formative years were in that decade, which is why it resonates so much with me, but I think the quality of stuff that was coming out really enhanced life for me. If I had to pick one thing, it would be the music. The diversity of the music was astounding. If you look at the Hot 100 from Feb 22, 1992, you had Right Said Fred, Prince and the NPG, Michael Jackson, George Michael/Elton John, Nirvana, Mariah Carey, U2 and Boyz II Men all within the top 20. You also had Color Me Badd (they totally had an extra ‘d’ at the end cuz they really were super tough) so maybe not everything in the 90s was perfect. But the music was great, even if some of it was ridiculous. The movies were also great. Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, I can go on and on with great flicks.
You recently did a great podcast on inappropriate toy names which was brilliant!
Have you got any similar pods planned in the future?
Glad you liked that one! I am currently recording a three-part series on Beavis and Butt-Head with Ashley Schlafly, then I will be discussing 90s One Hit Wonders with Carmelita, 90s Songs you May Have Forgotten with Toby Brendel and then I will also be working on an episode for 90s Real Estate, basically talking about houses that were in prominent 90s movies and going over their specs from Zillow. Kind of like a 90s version of Million Dollar Listing.
We are about to head into 2020 – what have you got planned with One Headlight?
I think more of the same. Picking fun 90s things to talk about. I will be talking about the Mighty Ducks, U2 and comparing Fast and Furious to Point Break. I’m also going to try and get some 90s celebs on the show for interviews, so hopefully they will say yes!
What have you been watching/listening to/reading at the moment – any great recommendations?
Well, I always listen to 90s music, but as far as recent music goes, I am into 21 Pilots, Wovenwar and Crosses. Lorde is also pretty amazing and am looking forward to the new Hootie and the Blowfish and Sevendust albums. Movies, I can’t stop watching Hobbs and Shaw. Such an entertaining flick even if it is not even remotely realistic. I grew up on Arnold and Stallone movies, so this is just the next gen of that genre. Also looking forward to the new Fast and Furious and Bond movies that are coming out in 2020. As for podcasts, I am always a fan of the Shat the Movies crew, Dueling Decades, Behind the Bastards, SYSK, The Rich Roll Podcast, and as always, Joe Rogan blows my mind on a daily basis. I am also looking forward to Ashley Schlafly’s debut pod No Need to Argue.
Finally what is your tip of the day?
