INTERVIEW: Izzie Naylor

At Minnis2Society we love to hear and learn about new talent – this week we discovered Izzie Naylor!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a singer/songwriter from near Manchester, UK. I write what I describe as kind of eerie emo-indie-alt-pop songs. I made youtube covers where I mostly turn cool songs into moody songs. Also, I love puns and I will never stop saying dumb camouflage jokes.

You have just dropped new single ‘Falling’ – Tell us a bit about the track.

Not to be *that* moody gal; I wrote Falling from seeing what was around me and from how I felt dealing with depression. I go to a music university and because everyone there is creative pretty much everyone has “bad brain days” so I wrote it to reflect those feelings and that mood. I use a lot of lyrical metaphor because I don’t want people to only hear my story from the song, I want people to be able to listen to it and put whatever meaning they feel behind it, so like to someone else it could be about a relationship. I think listening to music is a personal experience and the meaning can be completely subjective.

Who do you find as your influences or inspiration for your music?

Currently, The Japanese House, Maggie Rogers, Clairo, Phoebe Bridgers…. basically any female alt/indie writer, and of course Stevie Nicks.

Gotta say I’ve also been greatly inspired by Blake Richardson, who produced my tracks, and the New Hope Club boys, I’ve never not loved one of their songs!

2020 is round the corner, what have you got lined up next?

I may or may not have a few new tracks coming out that will create an EP, and then after that I’ve got a fun project lined up. Heaps more gigs too!

What have you been watching, listening to, or reading recently that you have been loving? Any recommendations?

Honestly, I have listened to ‘Something Has To Change’ by The Japanese House on repeat recently, this kind of song shows that women don’t have to be over dramatic and emotional in there vocal performance to have a great song!

I’ve been reading The Handmaid’s Tale recently because I love the series, and over summer I read The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle which has honestly become one of my favourites!

Over summer I binged Mind Hunter on Netflix and I definitely recommend that to anyone interested in true crime, and I’m currently watching Unbelievable, finally!

Also heaps of trashy Christmas movies!

Finally, what is your tip of the day?

Hug as many dogs as you can as often as you can.

Trashy Christmas movies and hugging dogs gets our vote Izzie!
