INTERVIEW: Penelope Isles

We got ridiculously excited that Penelope Isles had agreed to a chat! They are currently really busy touring all over the world after the release of their fantastic debut album, ‘Until The Tide Creeps In’. The record has been on major rotation at Minnis2Society HQ and track ‘Gnarbone’ is probably one of our personal favourites of the year!

Who is Penelope Isles?

Jack, aged 29, plays guitar and sings some songs. Lily, aged 23, plays bass and keys and sings some songs. Jack aka J-Sow or Sowey, aged 24, plays drums and sings backing vocals and Becky, aged 25, plays guitar and bass and sings backing vocals.

How did you all get together?

Lily moved to Brighton a few years ago to study music and was placed in a house share with J Sow. She met Becky through playing in bands. The three of them started a band for Lily’s solo project. Back home on the Isle Of Man, Lily and I started working on the songs in the studio and the project naturally became a collaboration between the two of us. So we started a new project comprising of both our songs and ideas. Then I moved to Brighton and Penelope Isles got going!

This is fantastic live version of ‘Gnarbone’ !

How has 2019 been for you so far?

Busy! We’ve visited more countries this year than I’ve ever been to in my life! It’s been a whirlwind. We’re playing with The Flaming lips tonight which is a real highlight!

What have you been loving recently? any Album, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts you have been enjoying?

I’m loving Cate Le Bon’s recent release. I’m new to her and I love it. Lily’s been obsessing over the Netflix show ‘One Strange Rock’ which is worth a watch. We are currently putting together our own TV show that we’ll be sharing very soon!

You have a massive tour coming up anywhere you are particularly excited to play?

We’re heading back to America next month! We’re playing all over North America and will be visiting some places we’ve only dreamed of going! California!!! Playing a couple of shows in Canada too. We’re back in Germany this month as well which we always love.

Aside from the tour what is up next for Penelope Isles?

We’re beginning to get going on another bunch or recording as well as planning more trips around the world! Hopefully another busy year for 2020. There will be a few more releases too before the year is out.
